OEM vs ODM vs SKD vs CKD — What the Differences Mean for Your Product Roadmap

These four terms appear on supplier capability sheets constantly, and they're often used interchangeably in ways that obscure meaningful differences. For buyers planning a hardware product roadmap, the distinctions matter — they determine how much control you have, how much risk you carry, and what your unit economics look like.

OEM — Original Equipment Manufacturing

You take an existing hardware design and apply your brand. Lowest friction to market, but your ability to differentiate on hardware is limited — your product looks like everyone else's under the skin.

ODM — Original Design Manufacturing

The manufacturer builds to your specification. You own the design output. This gives you meaningful hardware differentiation — port configurations, form factors, and performance profiles that are yours rather than shared across multiple brands.

SKD / CKD — Semi or Completely Knocked Down

Assembly models driven primarily by import duty optimization or local content requirements. SKD delivers major subassemblies; CKD delivers all components for full local assembly. Both require local assembly capability but can materially improve landed cost in the right market context.

Not all suppliers support all four models — and among those who do, capability depth varies significantly. Deep ODM means firmware and UI customization, not just PCB layout changes.

Most buyers start with OEM for speed to market and move toward ODM as volume and differentiation requirements grow. The question worth asking any supplier: how deep does the customization actually go?
